Are You Ready For OSHA’s New Silica Guidelines?

Refractory Installation

Time is ticking on the implementation of OSHA’s new crystalline silica exposure regulations. The new guidelines take effect soon and require contractors to limit permissible silica exposure to 50 micrograms per cubic meter of air over an eight-hour shift. In short, changes are needed across many industries to lower dust exposure.

While these changes are coming soon, we’ve been preparing for a while. We designed and introduced the patent-pending DustAway system for gunite and shotcrete jobs in the construction and refractory industries.

The DustAway system is the first of its kind and is a cost-effective way for contractors to meet the new regulations. It incorporates bulk bags, ranging from 500 to 3,000 pounds, that fit securely around the mixer openings to contain dust as the mixer fills. The bag’s dust ruffle encapsulates airborne particles, helping to control respirable dust.

Contractors using 50-pound paper bags of material to fill machines will be unable to control the dust that fills the air as the bag is opened. Switching from the bags to a single, 500-pound-capacity DustAway bulk bag not only significantly reduces dust, but also eliminates the effort of hefting 10 of the 50-pound bags. It’s a win-win solution; contractors get an easy and effective way to meet OSHA standards and it’s cost effective.

The DustAway system can be used with any size new or used machine, whether from Blastcrete or another manufacturer. We also offer customizable removable lids that will be available to fill the space where silica dust can escape.

Don’t wait until the last minute to get your construction or refractory business OSHA standard ready.
